Refugee School Impact Coordinator, Interfaith-RISE


The Refugee School Impact Coordinator will provide specialized services to new-arrival youth and their families and those who have been in the U.S. five years or less and continue to face integration and academic challenges. This position works toward the successful integration of children into schools and supportive programming strengthen academic performance to aid the social adjustment of newly arriving refugee youth.

This position will report to the Interfaith-RISE Director of Case Management.



This position is located at the Highland Park, NJ office.



  • Help refugee youth and their families connect to the school and larger community, cultivate cultural awareness for both the refugees and the communities in which they resettle, promote civic engagement, and enhance language skills.
  • Coordinate after school mentors/volunteer tutors for kids, partnering with local schools and universities to support English Language learning.
  • Organize and manage the volunteer base who work with refugee school kids to enroll in their local school districts and manage their tutoring and homework support.
  • Provide families with culturally and linguistically appropriate materials on programs or activities, translation services, and interpreter services
  • Provide specific advocacy around IEPs, 504s, and other special education and intervention services needed for students within their public schools
  • Create mechanisms by which families will regularly engage in activities during and outside school hours, such as after-school classes, weekend tutorials, and online assistance
  • Provide family connection to services such as cultural orientation, refugee parent/teacher meetings, and school orientation
  • Facilitate family participation/enrollment in programming that supports integration into the school system, such as English as a Second Language (ESL) sessions, mentoring, and group activities
  • Plan and execute summer programming for refugees in-house at Interfaith-RISE, as well as connecting students to local and affordable summer camp programs including managing summer scholarships
  • Create and implement data collection systems and compile program data on academic performance, such as high school graduation rates, accomplishment of required course work, and improved academic performance levels for participating youth.
  • Support tutor matching and engagement for adults studying for high school equivalency and community college.



Master’s degree in social work, education, or equivalent work experience. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Experience working in or with public schools. Experience working with diverse populations, including non-English speaking clients, and individuals from various faith, cultural, and social backgrounds.  Ability to multi-task and creatively problem solve, and ability to work in a fast-paced and vibrant environment required.
